Creating Herds

Herds help you group animals together for easier management and tracking. Learn how to create and organize herds in FarmFlo.

What is a Herd?

A herd is a group of animals that you manage together. Herds can be organized by:

  • Species or breed (e.g., "Angus Cattle", "Sheep Flock")
  • Purpose (e.g., "Breeding Stock", "Market Animals")
  • Age group (e.g., "Calves 2024", "Yearlings")
  • Location (e.g., "North Pasture Herd")
  • Any other grouping that makes sense for your operation

Creating a Herd

  1. Navigate to the Herds section from the sidebar
  2. Click the Add Herd button
  3. Enter a name for your herd
  4. Select the pasture where this herd is located
  5. Add an optional description
  6. Click Save

Managing Herds

Once you've created herds, you can:

  • Add animals to herds
  • Move animals between herds
  • Move entire herds to different pastures
  • View all animals in a herd at a glance
  • Track herd health and statistics

Herd Organization Tips

  • Start with broad categories and refine as needed
  • Use clear, descriptive names
  • Consider creating temporary herds for events (weaning, sorting)
  • Keep breeding groups separate for easier record-keeping
